University of Alberta School for Ethnographic Sensibility in Belgrade
University of Alberta Field School in Belgrade - June 1 - 28, 2015
The program is directed at:
Anthropologists and other social scientists who want to develop their ethnographic sensibility with the particular focus on non-verbal, embodied patterns of everyday life.
Practicing artists who want to explore the convergences between ethnographic and artistic training in perception, experience foreign cultures through apprenticeship in local art practices, and practically experiment with research creation.
Designers, architects, engineers, health-related professions, and others who are interested in engaging with their practice in a culturally sensitive way.
Belgrade, Serbia will become your laboratory for developing ethnographic skills that attune you to the nonverbal, tacit underpinnings of every culture. Through a series of playful field exercises that rely on different sensory modalities and embodied experience rather than on the knowledge of the local language, you will learn how to perceive hidden patterns in the flows of everyday life. We will show you how to break your usual perceptual habits and develop an acute receptivity to the different ways in which people greet each other and bargain, inhabit space and use objects, manipulate time, mix smells and tastes, queue for a bus, hail a taxi, or dance at a party. By adopting techniques used in artist training you will learn to notice things like timing, rhythms of movement, and other patterns in the everyday urban life that natives usually don’t. Finally, we will encourage you to explore alternative and artistic forms of representation through writing, film, performance, and other arts in order to share this findings with others.
